The knowledge of the four skills alone is not enough, the English Language Learners have to go a step ahead to train themselves in the content language of their specific areas which is necessary to meet the demands at their higher education level and also to meet the demands of their careers. There are various careers which demand good language skills to communicate with their workers at the global level. This is where the need for ESP arises at the tertiary level. English for specific purposes has to be introduced at the tertiary level in one of the semesters to enlighten the learners, the language skills needed in their specific fields. Most of the time, the learners are left in lurch when they have to be efficient with the register of their areas of study with which they have to pursue their careers. They are baffled to hear terms which are rather new to them as they are not commonly used in their English classes. My paper is an attempt to focus on the need for ESP at the tertiary level which will help learners gain awareness of the work place language and make them efficient in the language of the content areas of their fields.
