Motivation for Teacher Development

‘Only a perpetual student becomes a successful teacher’. This is true both literally and metaphorically. Today’s competitive world demands constant updating of one’s abilities and skills, more so that of a teacher, since he has to cater to the dynamic needs of youngsters getting ready to face the world. The working conditions of a teacher- large classes, frequent tests, correction of class work/ homework/ projects, preparing students for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, and yes, teaching and revising- leave him with little time to devote to his own development. Teachers will have to be motivated to take up studies, engage in action research, publish articles & books, conduct workshops or engage in some other activity which will bring back the thrill of teaching. In an educational institution, it is the fulfillment of the self-actualization needs of the teacher that is the most significant. Hence the other needs have to be looked after first. Later, the teacher can be motivated to contribute ideas for better teaching for which they are rewarded and they are given leave or facilities to attend conferences and advanced training sessions.
