Fluency practice in an Engineering Classroom

The definition of Fillmore is taken as the yardstick in this paper because it contains the relevant factors of fluency, like uninterrupted delivery of speech, coherence, appropriateness and creativity. According to Christopher Brumfit, it is the teacher’s responsibility to create plenty of opportunities for the learners to use the language they have learnt. The ability to speak fluently is the result of a lot of practice. Twenty-four activities are suggested in this paper for use in an engineering classroom in the Indian situation. They are: Retelling a Tale, Cracking a Joke, Narrating an Anecdote, the Viewer’s Choice, Music for Relaxation, Choosing a Celebrity, A Holiday Experience, Your favorite Author’s Class, Invention channel, A Shakespearean Taste, News in Brief, Art and Artists, Nobel Prize Winners, Film Knowledge, classes After ‘ If-clauses’, Planning a Tour, A Dream Class, The Wonders of the World, Odd news, Taking on a Role, Mock Interview, Debating Session, Discussion in Groups, Free Association. No correction of the learner’s language is done at the initial stage. They are allowed to speak naturally, aiming at fluency but not accuracy. When the activities are done as teamwork, the learners are motivated. This paper is strengthened with the feedback of the learners regarding the above mentioned activities tested in the classroom.
