‘Development of English Language Curriculum. A case for Bridging the Gap: Language Enhancement and Personality Development’

Objective
To raise an awareness amongst the teachers of English and also sensitivise them to an important but often a hidden agenda in the language curriculum, that is, ‘the personality development of the learners’.

Background
Development of Personality remains a major concern as a means to employability today.There is a general feeling and expectation that language teachers play a major role in developing the personality of the students as it is a universal belief that ‘Language reflects Personality’. There this workshop is an attempt to explore the possibilities for incorporating development of personality traits as a part of the objective of language teaching.

ProcedureThe workshop will help the participants dispel wrong notions discover what exactly is a language curriculum. Issues relating to the role of Syllabus, Textbooks, Methodology and Evaluation Pattern will be raised with a view to gaining clarity on these concepts. The part played by Needs Analysis in designing Language Curriculum will be highlighted. The workshop will focus on identifying the Personality Needs of our learners and suggest how to bring about a productive union between Language Needs and Personality Needs of our learners in the language classes. Other concerns of the workshop will be who Plans the Curriculum? How to plan the Curriculum? Procedure for analyzing Learner traits, Setting Objectives in the class. The workshop will converge towards accommodating objectives pertaining to the development of personality through a judicious choice of materials and methods. Author’s experience at NITW in handling a such a curriculum will be a model.
