Based on pedagogical experiments, this paper argues for the use of English humour as an important element in EFL instruction. Humour can help students understand the inseparable link between language and culture and provide a means through which the socio-cultural contexts of language can be better understood. Humour can also reduce the stress associated with learning a foreign language and promote integrative motivation to help students develop their own sense of humour and emotional intelligence.
