Mentoring is a Greek word which means enduring. It is defined as a sustained relationship between the youth and an adult. The adult offers support, guidance and assistance as the younger person goes through a difficult period, faces challenges, or works to correct earlier problems. There are two kinds of mentoring – natural mentoring and planned mentoring. Natural mentoring occurs through friendship, collegiality, teaching, coaching and counseling. Where as planned mentoring occurs through structured programs in which mentors and participants are selected and matched through formal processes. A data clearly shows that many youths have a desperate need for positive role models. These programs serve for the following board purposes like educational or academic mentoring, career mentoring and personal development mentoring. Mentoring culture has been developed nowadays. The Hallmarks of a mentoring culture are accountability, alignment, communication, value and visibility, demand, multiple mentoring opportunities and safety nets.
